Who is held, and where they go.

The Indiana Department of Correction publishes adult-release counts by county of admission, and individual sheriff’s offices publish jail rosters at varying intervals. This page surfaces both for the 12 focus counties.

Historical snapshot — IDOC figures as of October 2024; jail study as of 2022.

The IDOC operational-population and admissions figures below are a fixed snapshot from the last published IDOC monthly report (October 2024), and the jail prevalence figures are from the Scott County Jail Study (2022). These are not live feeds — read them as historical, not current. No counts here are fabricated. For current Indiana court activity see the live Opinions page.

What we publish about inmate populations

IDOC adult releases by county

Source: IDOC Adult Releases tables (PDFs)

For each of the 12 focus counties, SIJ tracks total releases per year, broken into CTP / probation / parole / discharge. Once the 2020–2025 PDFs are extracted, every county-year cell fills automatically through Schema 2.

Jail substance-use & mental-health prevalence

Source: Scott County Jail Study (2022) as anchor

85% substance-use history, 58% prior mental-health diagnosis. Used as an anchor for proxy estimates in surrounding rural jails until each sheriff’s office publishes its own roster study.

Post-intake overdose risk window

Source: National jail-overdose pattern

>1/3 of opioid deaths and >1/2 of other drug deaths in jail occur in the first 24 hours after booking. Post-release weeks 1–4 are the peak overdose risk window in the community.

About these figures. IDOC adult-releases data and sheriff jail rosters are published as periodic documents, not as live feeds, so the figures here are presented as historical snapshots with their as-of dates rather than current counts. See /methodology for the data sources, or /facilities for the facility-level view. For current Indiana court activity, use the live Opinions page.
