Schema 2 · IDOC releases + county-jail snapshots
Who is held, and where they go.
The Indiana Department of Correction publishes adult-release counts by county of admission, and individual sheriff’s offices publish jail rosters at varying intervals. This page surfaces both for the 12 focus counties.
What we publish about inmate populations
IDOC adult releases by county
For each of the 12 focus counties, SIJ tracks total releases per year, broken into CTP / probation / parole / discharge. Once the 2020–2025 PDFs are extracted, every county-year cell fills automatically through Schema 2.
Jail substance-use & mental-health prevalence
85% substance-use history, 58% prior mental-health diagnosis. Used as an anchor for proxy estimates in surrounding rural jails until each sheriff’s office publishes its own roster study.
Post-intake overdose risk window
>1/3 of opioid deaths and >1/2 of other drug deaths in jail occur in the first 24 hours after booking. Post-release weeks 1–4 are the peak overdose risk window in the community.
